NBLSA C.A.R.E.S. 2010-2011 Flyer download NBLSA C.A.R.E.S.The NBLSA C.A.R.E.S. (Contributing through Advocacy, Resources, Education, and Service) Campaign is in response to the earthquake that hit Haiti in January of 2010. However, this is not the organization's first service project with Haiti. Since 2007, NBLSA has partnered with Pax Christi Haiti and Kledev to aid the children of Cite de Soleil. NBLSA C.A.R.E.S. allows NBLSA and its members to continue their commitment to Haiti by working to positively impact the lives of Haiti's citizens. This year, NBLSA will resume its onsite service in Haiti. We will partner with the Lamp for Haiti Foundation to send 8-10 students to Haiti in January 2011. NBLSA C.A.R.E.S. Alternative Winter Break Trip January 9-15, 2011Join NBLSA for an alternative winter break trip the week of January 9 to 15, 2011* to Port au Prince, Haiti to conduct field research on human rights issues facing Haitian citizens. A small group of 10 trip participants will work with the Lamp for Haiti Foundation (www.lampforhaiti.org) to conduct this research. The Lamp Foundation is a not for profit corporation whose mission is to work together with the people of Haiti to advocate for the respect and protection of basic human rights in the areas of greatest misery and poverty in the capital of Port-Au-Prince. In pursuit of this mission, the Lamp provides basic health care, investigates allegations of human rights abuses, and provides educational and humanitarian aid. Participants will be required to do about two hours of outside reading per week prior to the trip to gain a better understanding of Haitian culture and the situation you will encounter working there. Upon their return, students will work with the Legal Director of the Lamp Foundation to synthesize the findings from their field study into a report similar to that found here. *Trip dates are subject to change by a few days. Timeline: Cost: For more information please contact: L.L.M. WorkshopsIn the United States, L.L.M. programs are often designed to teach foreign lawyers the basic legal principles of the United States. These programs include students from a variety of backgrounds including lawyers working in firms, government officials, law professors, judges, diplomats, human rights activists, doctoral students, and business leaders. L.L.M. students are an untapped resource on many of our local campuses. The L.L.M Workshops are intended to provide NBLSA members with the opportunity to: gain a better understanding of how Blacks in other countries are educated about the law, foster discussion among students about the differences in our educational systems, and develop ways in which we can influence greater change worldwide. International Book DriveNBLSA will be partnering with the International Book Project (IBP) to create a library in Tengecha Village, Kenya. IBP was founded in 1966, and since its inception has been providing books to countries worldwide, including Ethiopia, South Africa, India, Albania, the Philippines and Guatemala. World AIDS DayAIDS disproportionately affects the black community so it is up to us to spread the word about this devastating disease. It is important that we continue to bring awareness to the disease so that people do not forget how it continues to impact communities worldwide, and that the fight against AIDS is far from over. World AIDS Day will be celebrated on December 1, 2010, under the theme: "Universal Access and Human Rights." The day is an opportunity for everyone to raise awareness and to focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic. |
