SRBLSA Advocacy ProgrammingSRBLSA Advocacy Weekend 2011Dates: November 3-5, 2011 Location: Emory University School of Law located in Atlanta, GA Hotel: Emory Conference Center & Suites Vision: To encourage SRBLSA Chapters to participate in the legislative process and serve as advocates for the Southern Region. The purpose of the SRBLSA Lobby Day/Social Action Rally is to educate SRBLSA members on how to become involved with the legislative process, serve as advocates for their community, and learn what things they can do on the grassroots level to make a difference. Environmental Justice Advocacy WorkshopDates: January 18-22, 2012 at the SRBLSA Regional Convention Location: Birmingham, AL- Cumberland School of Law At the regional convention, the SRBLSA Attorney General and Director of Social Action will host a session in regards to Alabama's Hazardous Waste Anti-Concentration Law. Several environmental justice organizations like the EPA and Department of Environmental Management will be invited to discuss the law plus environmental lobbyists, residents and advocates. During the session, SRBLSA members will be asked to develop their own EJ policy to address the issue and the recommendations may be sent to state legislatures at a later date. Environmental Justice Webinar SeriesDates: October/November 2011, January 2012 During the fall and spring semester, chapter presidents and members will be able to participate in two environmental justice webinars. All SRBLSA chapters are required to put on or participate in one environmental justice event this year. The first webinar will be a basic introduction to want environmental justice entails. This webinar will most likely occur sometime in October or early November. The second webinar will be an introduction to environmental justice issues occurring in Birmingham, AL in preparation for the regional convention. During the convention, members will be asked to draft their own EJ policy for Alabama. This webinar will occur the week before January 18, 2012. |
